The
energy and environmental sectors are highly integrated, very sophisticated and
are based on maintaining an intricate equilibrium between; commercial market
fundamentals; advanced innovative technology development and commercialization;
project design and engineering; economics, finance; regulatory policy and
framework; as well as maintaining “sacro-sanctity” in transactional contracts
and agreements. It must be understood and appreciated by various stakeholders
that if there is a mismatch in any one of the above, the imbalance is often
difficult to rectify due to unintended consequences. There is so much
discussion today on sustainability, clean and green energy and related areas.
Beyond pure rhetoric from the various stakeholders worldwide, sustainability
must be based on sound balance and equilibrium of three key fundamental factors
or the “3 P’s".
At
the foundation of the “3 P’s” is a fair, balanced and equitable baseline which is
deeply rooted in the famous saying from time immemorial; “Don’t Waste Time, Energy, Money,
Water, and Food”. This really translates into reducing wastage and
striving for; “Common Sense”, “Common
Ground” and “Common Goal”. Thus, beyond rhetorical speeches, practical
efforts must be directed to minimizing wastage of natural resources while achieving
an optimal energy mix with comprehensive and integrated energy policy covering “all
of the above” energy sources (conventional / alternate / renewable) without
disqualification of any one source.
