Further Enhancing Quality of Elder Care

“Life is truly beautiful if we make it so”

As a volunteer and also serving family elder(s), it is truly heartening to observe the significant progress made to-date, as well as continual efforts, with respect to allopathic medicine’s essential approaches and methodologies for providing quality elder care.  This includes, but not limited to, a variety of important healthcare protocols, interventions, treatments, remedies, cures, and therapies, with emphasis on improving overall quality of elder care resulting in sustainable life extension.

Today’s doctors, specialists, nurses, medical support teams, and infrastructure are truly inspiring and amazing.  Based on experience feedback and lessons learned, there are also continual efforts being made with respect to feasible and viable integration of various holistic approaches and methodologies resulting in overall positive lifestyle - thereby further enhancing quality of elder care with respect to better health, wellness, and wellbeing.

In addition, depending on the weather and season, daily routine of being outdoors with ample fresh air, lots of sunshine, being in natural surroundings also supports a positive lifestyle.  This includes, but not limited to, regular regimen of walking, flexibility exercises, and related activities.  Also, sufficient hydration, optimal mix of nutrients, and a well-balanced diet which includes fruits and vegetables.  Also, incorporation of melodic music and sounds, and soothing harmonics at proper frequency levels to provide quality rest and sleep.  Utilizing biofabrics, carbon fiber-based memory foam bedding, ergonomic pillows further improves relaxation, better posture, rejuvenation, as well as ample duration of deep rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

The elderly are truly priceless and highly valuable members of society-at-large based on their skills, qualifications, knowledge, life experiences, values, maturity, and wisdom.  Based on definitive consultation with doctors, specialists, nurses, and medical support teams, it is essential to develop a custom-tailored plan at the specific individual level consisting of an overarching definitive strategy,  a laser-focused quality care regimen, and then timely execution over days, weeks, months, and years in a sustainable manner.  It is also very important to set practical, realistic, and achievable goals at the specific individual level along with qualitative and quantitative metrics for measurement as well as key performance indicators (KPIs) for tracking and monitoring forward progress.

The purpose of any and all mentoring, focusing on holistic wellness, health, sports, fitness, nutrition, yoga, ayurveda and related is to promote healthy lifestyles and balance between Spirit-Mind-Body.  This includes any and all associated proven processes, methods, techniques, therapies which may also include educational purposes with the goal of creating awareness and disseminating information.  All information on the Blog in no way precludes the mandatory need for seeking definitive prior advice, diagnosis and/or treatment from a qualified medical physician and/or specialist related to Spirit-Mind-Body fitness and/or training program(s).  Prior to starting any Spirit-Mind-Body fitness and/or training program(s), it is mandatory to get a thorough examination by a qualified medical physician and/or specialist.  In addition, a medical physician and/or specialist’s approval must be obtained prior to undertaking any Spirit-Mind-Body fitness and/or training program and as well as continual examination(s) by a medical physician and/or specialist during the entire duration and course of undertaking any Spirit-Mind-Body fitness and/or training program(s).

“Going Forward Plan” - Effective Tool for Empowerment

“Life is truly beautiful if we make it so.”

As a Volunteer Mentor, with humility and heartfelt gratitude, it is such an honor and privilege to be able to continually provide guidance and coaching to many youth and adults from all walks of life. There are so many with inherent, untapped, and hidden talent, a variety of skillsets, and immense potential which is truly remarkable and unbelievable. Each person is a precious shining star in this vast Universe which we are all a part of. Accordingly, a critical enabling tool for supporting and assisting today’s youth and adults is to develop a sound “Going Forward Plan” which is an effective means for empowerment.

From a qualitative perspective, overarching elements are:

Vision Statement - One sentence to articulate a Vision in career and in life.

Mission Statement - One sentence to capture a Mission in career and in life.

Purpose Statement - One sentence to describe a Purpose in career and in life.

Some suggested and recommended Motivational Questions include, but not limited to:

Motivational Question 1 - Who are You? - One sentence to bring forth who you really are from deep within.

Motivational Question 2 - What Do You Want? - One sentence to expound what is it that you really want from deep within.

Motivational Question 3 - Why is the word “Impossible” really spelled “I’m possible”?

Motivational Question 4 - What does the phrase truly mean: “Life is a great teacher – she gives the experience first and then the lesson”?

Motivational Question 5 - Why is it that the key to solving any problem lies in first and foremost truly understanding and appreciating the underlying nature and cause of the problem (or solution lies within the problem itself)?

Motivational Question 6 - How do you see yourself “giving back and paying it forward” to others and society-at-large?

Motivational Question 7 – What is your specific plan for maintaining a positive “holistic” lifestyle in terms of proper nutrition, health, exercise, rest, balance, and motivation?

Another key self-analysis tool is:

Strengths – What are specific tangible and perceived strengths which are inherent to you and can be effectively utilized?

Weakness – What are the most likely definitive weaknesses which must be identified, addressed, and you must overcome in a timebound manner?

Opportunities – What are the practical, realistic, and achievable opportunities foreseen for you based on current trends and part of an overall outlook?

Threats – Do you envision any tangible or perceived threats which pose potential risks and what is your definitive mitigation strategy and plan?

Based on global, regional, and national macro-trends, some key goals and objectives which can be updated as required based on dynamic ongoing events:

Near-Term - Where do you want to be one (1) year from now in career and life?

Short-Term - Where do you want to be three (3) years from now in career and life?

Medium-Term - Where do you want to be five (5) years from now in career and life?

Long-Term - Where do you want to be ten or more (10+) years from now in career and life?

Key economic and financial planning tools in the near-, short-, medium-, and long-term include:

Balance Sheet – What is your plan for building tangible assets (e.g., immovable, moveable, liquidity via bank accounts, certificate of deposits (CDs), securities, etc.) and what is your plan on minimizing liabilities (e.g., senior/subordinate/mezzanine debt, over-the-counter derivatives, etc.)?

Income/Expenses Statement – What is your plan for maintaining a sound income statement in terms of tangible sources of earned income, other definitive income sources including capital gains as well managing fixed/variable expenses, interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, etc.?

Cash Flow Statement – What is your plan for tracking sources/uses of funds, waterfall cashflows, and ensuring surplus and cumulative cash flow?

It is essential to develop a user-friendly Excel spreadsheet model to monitor and track monthly fixed/variable income, fixed/viable expenses, tangible assets and pending liabilities, and track cash flows (sources/uses of funds). Must also review monthly bank statement(s) regularly. In addition, must regularly “reconcile the bank statement” while keeping track of deposits/credits and debits. Most critical is to minimize and manage all debt sources as well as other financial obligations and tax liabilities.

A sound “Going Forward Plan” is a highly constructive and enabling tool which provides a positive path in a sustainable manner for everyone.

Must Stay Positive – Cannot Give Up!

With heartfelt gratitude, I have competed in the 2023 Masters’ indoor track and field season. I had a bad hamstring pull and knee problems.  All through the months of April and May, I focused on stretching, regularly putting ice, and daily training for the 2023 Masters’ outdoor track and field season.  Key emphasis is on the 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and hopefully the 400 meters.

I am daily maintaining focus on spirituality, maintaining holistic wellness and wellbeing, and a sustainable positive lifestyle with proper nutrition, rest, exercise, balance, and motivation.  Besides health, I have also added increased emphasis on strength and fitness by doing regular resistance training.  I am going to the nearby fitness gym to do upper- and lower-body weight training.  I am also doing stairs twice a week at the nearby high school track.

I am doing my best to daily hydrate well along with lots of fruits and vegetables as well as minimizing consumption of processed foods. I have totally stopped all carbonated beverages. In addition, I am doing my best to stay away from foods with high sugar, high salt, processed flour, deep-fried food, as well as any fast-food.

Also, as always, continually boosting my immune system and always be highly mindful, live in the moment, continually generate positive thoughts, words, deeds, have good habits, and radiate positive energy.  I am always staying positive and always going to cross the finish line.

Fight On!

Journey Continues into 2023

It is December 2022 and it has been a very long journey since mid-2017 fighting and battling cancer. In all the various forms and types, cancer is truly an enemy from within and everyone must be vigilant on a 24 hour, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year basis in the fight as well as the battle.

With heartfelt gratitude, I look forward to January 2023 while focusing on spirituality, inward path or "sadhana", yoga, ayurveda, paranayama, staying positive, maintaining holistic wellness via sustainable positive lifestyle with proper nutrition, rest, exercise, balance, and motivation.

Taking nothing for granted, also focus on regular fitness, training, and hopefully competing in indoor and outdoor track and field events – while adhering to overall health, wellness, and wellbeing. Also, continually boosting my immune system and always be highly mindful, live in the moment, continually generate positive thoughts, words, deeds, have good habits, and radiate positive energy.

Most important, continue to do good, be good, see good, giving back and paying it forward. "Life is truly beautiful if we make it so". I'm always staying positive and always going to cross the finish line.  Fight On!

Cancer: A Continual Battle with an Enemy Within

On July 31, I was truly grateful to compete at the 2021 Keystone State Games in Pennsylvania in 400 meters, long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, and 1500 meters race walk.  With heartfelt gratitude I was able to get a gold medal in the 400 meters and the long jump events.  I was able to get bronze medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 1500 meters race walk. I'm dedicating all medals in each event to my Dad (and Mom looking down from Heaven above) and the outstanding radiation oncologists and entire medical staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for helping me and supporting me during the long continual battle over the last 4 to 5 years.

Fighting cancer is a continual battle with an enemy which is within.  Every individual person has key internal and external influencing factors, determinants, and mechanisms which directly impact their highly complex and integrated immune system response – which is very critical for overall wellness and wellbeing.  Internally, each person has their very own unique DNA which intrinsically impacts their body’s various cells, organs, critical subsystems, systems (e.g., central nervous system, neuromuscular system, and metabolic system, etc.), inherent traits, and unique characteristics.  Externally, there exists a plethora of environmental factors which include, but not limited to, quality of air/water/food, stresses, personal responsibilities, obligations, liabilities, living conditions, personal interactions and relationships, emotional/mental health, adverse substance abuse/addiction, and many others – all of which directly impact overall health, daily experiences, and lifestyle.

There also exists an important interrelationship, correlation, and balance between the main causes of inflammation and the commensurate immune system response based on the underpinning of positive lifestyle of the specific individual. To enhance the overall wellness and wellbeing, one specific key area of focus must be on the effective boosting of the immune system response.  From the onset, it is always very important for each and every individual person to consult with highly qualified allopathic medical professionals on the different available pathways to boosting the individual immune system response - through innovative treatment, therapies along with medication - if required.

Along with the various allopathic methodologies and approaches for treatment and associated therapies, integrated alternative holistic approaches may also supplement, support, and assist in effectively the boosting immune system response.  Depending on everyone’s specific needs and choices, a customized holistic strategy and plan can be developed incorporating international (e.g., eastern and western) best practices and implemented to improve overall wellness and wellbeing.  The main underlying driver throughout the entire lifecycle process is to: always be highly mindful, live in the moment, continually stay positive, generate positive thoughts, have good habits, and radiate positive energy.

I'm always staying positive and always going to cross the finish line.  Fight On!

Holistic Approaches for Boosting Immune System Response

Each and every individual person has key internal and external influencing factors, determinants, and mechanisms which directly impact their highly complex and integrated immune system response – which is very critical for overall wellness and wellbeing.

Internally, each person has their very own unique Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) molecule which intrinsically impacts their body’s various cells, organs, subsystems, systems (e.g. central nervous system, neuromuscular system, and metabolic system, etc.), inherent traits, and unique characteristics.  Externally, there exists a plethora of environmental factors which include, but not limited to, quality of air/water/food, stresses, responsibilities, obligations, liabilities, living conditions, personal interactions and relationships, and many others – all of which directly impact overall health, daily experiences, and lifestyle.

There also exists an important interrelationship, correlation, and balance between the main causes of inflammation and the commensurate immune system response based on the underpinning of positive lifestyle of the individual. An important objective is to address major metabolic diseases which are currently prevalent such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and many others.

In order to enhance overall wellness and wellbeing, one specific key area of focus must be on the effective boosting of the immune system response.  From the onset, it is always very important for each and individual person to consult with highly qualified allopathic medical professionals on the different available pathways to boosting the individual immune system response. Throughout the consultation process, based on proper science, innovation, and latest technology, it is essential to clearly understand:

§  The nature of the underlying diagnosis impacting proper individual immune system response
§  The probable and possible underlying cause(s)
§  The effective course of corrective action(s)
§  The impact and outcome(s) if the corrective action(s) are implemented with associated risks and mitigation measures

Along with the various allopathic approaches and methodologies for treatment and associated therapies, integrated alternative holistic approaches may also supplement, support, and assist in effectively the boosting immune system response.

Starting with proper nutrition (e.g. key health benefits from phytochemicals via fruits and vegetables), rest, fitness, exercise, balance, and motivation, positive lifestyle can be achieved in a definitive manner. Depending on each individual’s needs and choices, a customized holistic strategy and plan can be developed incorporating international best practices and implemented to improve overall wellness and wellbeing. The main underlying driver throughout the entire lifecycle process is to: always be highly mindful, live in the moment, continually stay positive, generate positive thoughts, have good habits, and radiate positive energy.

Overcoming Key Challenges to Empowering Women, Minorities, and Disadvantaged

Globally, there many valiant efforts which have been made in overcoming the key challenges to empowering women, minorities, and the disadvantaged.  The journey of life is long and must be endured with unconditional love, fortitude, empathy, compassion, and forbearance until success breeds success in any substantive efforts in the near-, short-, medium-, and long-term.

In this regard, there must always be renewed and enhanced focus.  Greater emphasis must be placed on the key underlying definitive problems, factors, drivers, and issues which both directly and indirectly impact the proper and just cause of enabling a better quality of livelihood and lifestyle for the many women, minorities, and the disadvantaged who daily struggle all over the world.

Once the cause and nature of the underlying problems, factors, drivers, and issues are well understood and appreciated, an effective course of corrective action can be ascertained, assessed, and evaluated prior to determining next steps towards implementing solutions.

Good, sound, humane, and just socio-economic and public policy driven by effective overarching framework, legislation, regulation, and directives are just one aspect of the paradigm shift which must continually be in-place.

Based on efforts made over the last fifty years, capacity building programs are a key element which must be properly strategized, designed, planned, and implemented in order to ensure measurable metrics with results on a qualitative and quantitative basis.

Greater emphasis, via public-private-partnerships (PPPs), can potentially enable capacity building programs focusing on primary, secondary, and collegiate education as well as technical skills training in various vocational trades.  In addition, well designed micro-finance programs can enable women, minority, and disadvantaged to undertake small business and entrepreneurship – an important area for empowerment.

Another key area is to focus on overcoming important health, wellness, and well-being challenges related to lifestyle diseases directly and indirectly impacting emotional, mental, and physical health (including substance abuse and addictions).  Increased emphasis must be placed on propagating a proper lifestyle which addresses greater focus on proper diet, nutrition, rest, exercise, balance, and motivation.

In many cases, effective “holistic and integrated solutions” can provide definitive intervention to those women, minorities, and disadvantaged who are truly helpless and require a helping hand in dealing with overcoming key challenges which impact their daily quality of livelihood and lifestyle.

Cancer: Just Cannot Be Afraid, but, Stay Positive!

It has been over two years journey so far on this long and winding road.  For the original cancer diagnosis, I did not opt for surgery, chemotherapy, standard radiation, but underwent high dose radiation treatment and resulting painful side effects with fatigue and other related issues.  I must go back in September for another MRI and biopsy to verify and validate any spread in the region.  Most recently, I had to get a skin biopsy.  The oncologists are doing their best and I am truly grateful for their efforts.

On my personal side, there has been an increased focus on maintaining a positive lifestyle based on proper diet with good nutrition to improve my immune system, try to get more rest, ample exercise, while doing my best to maintaining proper balance and motivation.  It is very hard sometimes, however, I just cannot be afraid, make excuses, but, stay positive and move forward.

Most important and key positive enabler is the outstanding moral support from family, friends, and the entire global track & field (athletics) community consisting of coaches and fellow athletes.  I am truly grateful for all the encouragement and guidance to keep focus on the essential elements in battling cancer: Character, Health, Fitness, Training, and Competition.

I am not going to give up and keep going.  Going to try and do my best to continually train and compete in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters.  I will always remember the great words of the legendary Coach Vern Wolfe, our former head track & field coach at University of Southern California, “Always believe in the power within you.  Life is truly wonderful.”.  Also, the most precious words of Coach F. Eugene Driver III, our head coach and President of the Trojan Masters Track Club, “always finish first in your lane”.  I realize more than anything else that Life is more about just “always crossing the finish line, no matter what - that itself is victory.”

I constantly pray for all my fellow human beings worldwide during their own Life journey as they battle cancer.  My thoughts and prayers will be for them always.

The journey of Life is not over until it is really over…I am going to stay positive and keep moving forward and never ever look backward.

The purpose of any and all mentoring, focusing on holistic wellness, health, sports, fitness, nutrition, yoga, ayurveda and related is to promote healthy lifestyles and balance between Spirit-Mind-Body. Ongoing Fight with Cancer

"Life is truly beautiful - believe it and experience it"

It is now nearly two years with the initial diagnosis of cancer.  The journey has been long, arduous, many times uphill, with lots of uncertainty, sometimes much doubt, and many times taking it one-day-at-a-time.  Throughout, some key influencing factors require continual focus, attention, and plenty of mindfulness. These include, but not limited to, making definitive and constructive lifestyle changes with emphasis on a proper diet, nutrition, rest, exercise, balance, and motivation - taking a "holistic" approach.

Source: Trojan Masters Track Club
During the entire process, it was and continues to be essential to seek and undergo the required professional medical expertise, effective medical counseling, getting multiple independent professional opinions, key biopsies, and focused treatments and therapies.  Making time and taking time in maintaining the day-to-day routines, disciplines, ups and downs, as well as attending to critical appointments with doctors and specialists.

An important area which continues to be essential is ensuring maintaining proper overall health, fitness, and training.  Particular attention in getting proper hydration, vitamins and nutrients, ample strength and resistance training, and enough stretching and flexibility exercises. Most importantly keeping a close eye on the various forms of fatigue and stresses (metabolic, neuro-muscular, and central nervous system), and staying within the resulting pain threshold - knowing my limitations.

Also, I cannot ever look back at the past, must be continually mindful of the present, and not get too overwhelmed by the future which is totally unknown.  Moreover, never ever feel sorry for myself, yet be grateful for each and every day as a blessing and one more chance to be a better human being and person. Always continually praying for others who may be also undergoing battle with cancer and other illnesses.

In addition, I must get back to regular competitive running which is very helpful in setting timely fitness and training routines, achievable goals for meets, events, and times, and making positive forward progress - keep moving ahead and never look back.

It is time for me to get back to a sound balance of aerobic training via longer distance running, anaerobic training via high intensity intervals, and speed training via starting blocks, strides, and wind-sprints.  I must make sure to do ample hills or stairs training at least couple of times per week.  I am going to focus and plan to compete outdoors in key events; 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters - hopefully get a chance someday to compete in 800 meters.

Come what may, it really does not matter much what the future holds, however, it is what is done in the present which can potentially make a difference in the near-term, short-term, and eventually the medium-term and long-term future. Fight On!

Immunotherapy…a Positive Direction

After over a year, it has been a long journey of fighting cancer while undergoing numerous tests, high dose radiation treatment and its resulting side effects and symptoms.

Thankful to great doctors including world-class radiation oncologists, nurses, and other medical professionals, the main focus was on addressing and dealing with the carcinoma in a definitive manner.  Also, proactively maintaining proper emotional, mental and physical health enabled effective recovery during this period.

I also came to know through the specialist doctors that my carcinoma was a result of not hereditary reasons or some other causes but…most probably due to a genetic mutation.

I am grateful to get proper consultation, guidance and advice from renowned immunologists and now focused on moving forward with immunotherapy in ensuring no recurrence of the carcinoma or any potential metastatic effects.

Key emphasis is now on making the most effective lifestyle changes while eliminating processed foods, refined foods, artificial ingredients, increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, and natural phytochemicals to properly restore the original DNA structure.  Also, regular meditation, mindfulness, yoga, maintaining getting proper and timely rest, fitness, and training – with the main goal of drastically boosting my auto-immune system.

The journey of Life is not over until it is over…I am going to stay positive and keep moving forward and never ever look backward.

The purpose of any and all mentoring, focusing on holistic wellness, health, sports, fitness, nutrition, yoga, ayurveda and related is to promote healthy lifestyles and balance between Spirit-Mind-Body. Staying Positive into 2018…

As the New Year 2018 dawns, in retrospect, it has been a challenging journey over the last one year in dealing with the various multiple tests for cancer markers, biopsy, MRI scans, preparation for treatment and subsequently undergoing high dose radiation treatment.  Further, addressing and moving forward with daily, weekly, monthly next steps in tackling both side effects and additional symptoms on a 24/7 basis.

Looking ahead into 2018, my journey continues, but, it is important to focus on staying positive and taking definitive steps with proper lifestyle, diet, rest, exercise, balance and motivation.  In addition, getting back to definitive emphasis on health, fitness, training and hopefully competing again soon.

Each and every hour, day, and week, I am thankful I to have another chance and to make it to the next moment which lies just ahead.  Cannot look back, but, only forward.  It has been said that the past is not recoverable at all, the future is totally unknown, for it is the present which total contains both the past and the future, and, it is the present which truly matters in making a difference.

Staying positive into 2018…

Fighting Cancer - Holistic Approaches

As a person diagnosed with cancer for the first time and also a pure novice to cancer, it was very difficult for me in trying to understand and appreciate the challenges as well as the various methodologies and approaches for treatment and associated therapies.

From the onset, keeping an open mind, it is always very important to get highly qualified multiple professional opinions on different available pathways to address effective course of action.  Throughout the process, with proper science, innovation and technology, it is essential to clearly understand the nature of the diagnosis, the probable and possible underlying cause(s), the effective course of corrective action(s), and the likely impact and outcome(s) if the corrective action(s) are implemented along with risks and mitigation.

Through an interactive, consultative, collaborative, and focused process with the different physicians, I had to deal with specific options such as; surgery, chemotherapy, standard radiation, high dose radiation, hormone therapy and brachytherapy.  In addition, after additional advice and consultation, I accepted the fact that I must also undertake restorative, regenerative, and alternative holistic therapies such as Yoga, Pranayama, Ayurveda, Tai Chi, and related pathways.  I realize that it is very critical to clearly listen, understand and appreciate what is being advised to me by the various physicians and to make and take personal time to concentrate, contemplate and meditate prior to arriving at a definitive decision on taking next steps.  I also realize it is very important to undertake a proactive focus as well as accepting personal responsibility to continually stay positive and avoid negative energy.

In addition, there must be individual emphasis on paying daily attention to constructively undertaking positive lifestyle changes in ensuring proper rest, diet, wellness, wellbeing, exercise, balance, and motivation.  Also, continual emphasis on further enhancing health, fitness and training (if possible) to preclude direct impact of adverse side effects and symptoms from the prescribed treatment and therapies.

I realize cancer is an uphill journey which I cannot ever be over-confident nor ever look back, but, only move forward with each step and doing my best in staying positive.  It is also very important to be highly “mindful” and take it hour-by-hour, day-by-day and week-by-week – as long as it takes to complete this journey.

Through The Clouds

Took a walk today, I saw the sky above and the earth below
Everywhere I went, it was so from here, there, and everywhere
Through the valleys and mountains, it’s seems so much so.

Just looking up and seeing above the hovering clouds all over
As they pervade, roam and float through the sky from dawn-to-dusk
Seems as though there are clouds always there up above each of us.

With the sky, the earth and the clouds here, there, and everywhere
Took a moment and pondered on a vision, mission and purpose
Saw brilliance of the sun shining so effortlessly through all clouds.

So inspired, closed my eyes and took a deep breath of fresh air
Rejuvenating my inner spirit, mind and body so much so
All thoughts became so very clear with the feeling of exuberance.

With a deep breath of fresh air, positive energy radiating from within
World appears as a reflection, reaction and resound of inner being
While focusing on feeling good, seeing good, being good and doing good.

Striking a Balance between the 2 I’s

As my journey in dealing with cancer continues, I am realizing more each day that there is a lot I must also do on my own besides the allopathic treatment efforts undertaken by my doctors and specialists in taking tangible steps in overcoming this illness.

At times, it seems as if each and every day is always uphill with ongoing bouts of fatigue and feeling down.  However, I am doing by best to overcome any negative thoughts and feelings.  Accordingly, I have started to refocus on specific and tangible steps I must take with respect to positive lifestyle, health and wellness.

I am also re-looking at tangible ways to reduce any sources of inflammation while boosting my immune system.  I am specifically focusing on my diet, rest, exercise, training, and motivation as a means to strike a balance between inflammation sources and my immune system.  I have started to do regular hatha yoga, pranayama (deep breathing), bhajan (devotional songs), increased my hydration via water, regular drinking of vegetable juices (beet root, carrot, ginger etc.), taking turmeric, and cutting down on any artificial / processed foods.

Deep down, on this journey, I realize that there is no “silver bullet”, but, I must also help find ways to actively complement, support and assist the efforts of my doctors and specialists as they undertake my treatment.  I also got to keep going, one step-at-a-time, be practical and realistic on my expectations as well as outcomes.  Since “it is what it is”, I just have to look forward and not look back.  All things are possible when I start looking within to tap into an inner source of strength leading to positive thoughts, words and actions.

A New Journey: Staying Positive with Cancer

My last competitive Masters Track races were in Woodbridge New Jersey in mid-September 2016 in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters.  I kept training and focused on the upcoming 2017 indoor Masters Track events which start in early January and continue into late March.  I was really looking forward to competing in the 60 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters.

On a cold fall Saturday, in October 2016, I went to my primary care physician for a complete physical exam with the normal routine of tests.  Based on the results, all key parameters seemed within the various limits and I really felt good about it.  I read further and on the last page of the report, I noticed my PSA levels were very high. Accordingly, my doctor recommended that I see a local urologist and thus got a referral and made the appointment.

During a span of the next three (3) months, I went and met three (3) different urologists and got varying opinions and viewpoints.  I also got additional tests done, an MRI, and finally got a biopsy.  I was mentally prepared to just be brave and braced myself to accept whatever the results may turn out to be.  The results of the MRI and biopsy indicated I tested positive.  Upon hearing the news, at that instantaneous moment, I did not feel any emotion, took a deep breath and just kept thinking of the “C” word – Cancer.

Thereafter, over the next few days, it felt as if I had hit a brick wall.  Deep in the back of my mind, I just kept on thinking and saying to myself to just stay positive and I must go through whatever hurdles I need to go through to get over this new bump-in-the-road, a new hurdle, and a new challenge.

Thanks to my closest family, friends, colleagues, teammates and inspiring coaches at Trojan Masters Track Club and USC Track & Field Program, with deep introspect, I renewed my inner faith.

I have duly accepted to be responsible to myself and those around me.  I made a commitment to seek-out, listen, understand and appreciate the guidance and advice of proper doctors, latest state-of-the-art science and technology, implement proper lifestyle changes (diet/nutrition, rest, balance, and motivation) and most importantly – overcome fearA new journey has now started for me and I can never ever look back.  I realize I must keep walking forward, step-by-step, stay positive and, Fight On!
